Cat deliberately acts up, need help?

My 3 year old neutered male cat, Gizmo, has been waking me up at insane hours of the morning, looking for food. When he doesn't have his canned food in his bowl and I am asleep, he will jump on my desk or dresser and knock things over until I get up, and he knows he isn't allowed on either thing. He knows because every time I even say his name, he jumps down. Is there any way to cure my kitty's little "diva" act?
