I have a community tank, which I have a male Betta in it, Why does he hide, I give him different food?

Is he happy or sad, I have noticed he gets along with the other fishies. Or is this normal for him to stay behind the filter. He does move from side to side, or should I say around the aquarium from time to time. Just curious.
