Why isn't my python irc bot working?

okay my friend thomas from germantown high school (yes thomas if u r reading this plzz tell me) told me about the computer language python. I downloaded python and opend the python gui when i try to input some code and save it to make an irc bot it just opens cmd and closes it helppppp!!!!!!!! i really want to try this python. did i download the wrong one i downloaded python 3.0 and also if anybody can give me the code to creating an irc bot it would be greatly apprecitied and yes please helppppppppppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am running windows xp sp 3.
